Activities with toddlers at the ripe ages 1-4 are fun, but some are quite challenging. At the top of the list? Plane rides! Few things spike stress levels like energetic, crying, and unstoppable little humans at 30,000 feet in the air. Especially when you’re stuck in a confined space with a crowd and nowhere to hide. You might even avoid the shortest flight until you’re confident that outbursts are a thing of the past.

After countless getaways with my babies starting just 4 weeks old, I know that traveling with toddlers can feel overwhelming, to say the least. To dull the anxiety that laid ahead, I pack thoughtfully to give me a sense of control. My packing system is constantly evolving as the kids age and as I strive to find the most magical method. BUT, there are 5 travel essentials that have never failed me on flights with toddlers.

My packing strategies, both old and new, always feature these essential items for a smooth journey! Here is my toolkit of essential items that will transform your plane ride from a potential disaster into a more enjoyable sky-high experience.

1. The Enchanted Snack Arsenal
Every hero knows the power of sustenance. For a toddler, snacks are not just food; they’re tiny packets of peace and happiness. Aim for less sugar or sugar-free if possible to avoid a crash (and I don’t mean the aerospace kind). When you hear the distant rumble of a tantrum brewing, whip out your enchanted snack arsenal:
- Sugar-Free Suckers: No complaints about ear pains if you time this offering with altitude shifts.
- Dried Fruits and Nuts: Compact, nutritious, and mess-free. A perfect trifecta!
- Cheese Wands: Protein-packed and toddler-approved, these magical sticks keep hunger at bay.
- Crunchy Crackers and Rice Cakes: Perfect for tiny hands and big appetites.
- Fruit Pouches: Squeezeable and fun, these pouch potions are a hit with mini adventurers.
Why bring a snack container? We found that having a container for an extra croissant from the cafe or muffin from the buffet helped us get through times when we didn’t know where we’d be next. You’ll thank me when you arrive to your destination! Pick a compact vessel to throw in a backpack or tote bag and you’ll be ready to combat any hunger-induced crankiness that comes your way:
Melii Spin Snack Container – This spinning wheel is perfect for small hands and snacky appetites. I love this for it’s small flat shape and the way it fits seamlessly inside a toddlers napsack.
TurtingAs Snack Containers – When you have multiple kids like me, this is the option for you. They had me at the pastel colourway. Bonus: they are made from high quality wheat straw and can hold up to 2 cups of food.
Beaba Stainless Steel Bento Box – I’m drawn to stainless steel but hate the weight. This one has a silicone cover and lid which means it’s light and compact for travel!
2. The Entertainment Treasure Trove
Keeping a toddler entertained on a flight is like taming a dragon—it requires skill, patience, and the right tools. Your treasure trove of entertainment should include:
- The Magic of a Device: Frankly, I have nothing against screens during travel. It has been our peace maker on road trips and short flights. Each of my three kids have access to Amazon Fire Tablets. Ownership of the tablets still belong to us so it’s clear to them who makes the rules. All three tablets are equipped with Amazon Kids+ and pre-loaded with their favorite shows, movies, and educational apps that are age appropriate. For families who keep screen use at bay, download toddler stories or songs onto an old phone. The Yoto Player is also a great option, featuring audio stories on a fun device that toddlers can use on their own. Don’t forget a well-fitted pair of child-size headphones! this gives you access to onboard entertainment (just make sure you have the right jack for your flight).
- Colouring and Crayons: Triangular crayons are a must to avoid the dreaded roll-away crayon scenario.
- Sticker-By-Letter Books: We use Brain Games sticker books for all our trips. The younger ones use Sticker-By-Letter and my older son graduated to Sticker-By-Numbers which takes a bit more focus.
- Mini Magnetic Heroes and Villains: Small toys or figurines can spark imaginative play and keep tiny hands busy.
3. Comfort Charms
For a toddler, the unfamiliarity of a plane can be overwhelming. Bring loveys or comfort items can soothe their anxieties and help them feel safe:
- The Guardian Blanket and Cuddly Companion: A favorite blanket or stuffed animal can act as a comforting presence. Anything they adore will do. Of course, I adore our Huggabeau loveys for its neutral style and non-distracting aesthetic for vacation photos! But, it’s the lovey of choice that they pick at the moment before departure always wins.
- Change of Tiny Armor: Extra clothes are essential for unexpected spills or diaper disasters.
4. Hygiene Potions and Elixirs
Planes can be germy, sticky places, and toddlers have a knack for finding messes. Equip yourself with hygiene essentials to keep things clean and fresh:
- Magic Wipes: Versatile and indispensable for cleaning hands, faces, and surfaces.
- Sanitizing Potion: Hand sanitizer is a must for keeping germs at bay.
- Diaper Kit: More diapers than you think you’ll need, along with a portable changing pad for quick, clean changes.
- Roll of Plastic Bags: Perfect for containing dirty diapers, soiled clothes, or any other unexpected messes.
5. Mom’s Survival Pack
As the captain of your adventure, don’t ever forget about yourself. You need to stay energized and prepared. Here’s what to include in your survival kit:
- Hydration Flask: A reusable water bottle to keep you hydrated—essential for maintaining your superpowers.
- Nutritious Nibbles: Healthy snacks for yourself to keep your energy levels high.
- Off-Screen Literature: Down-time away from your phone has been proven to increase serotonin levels! Up-level your mind and body for those few minutes you can steal for yourself. On my last trip to Mexico, I read The Whispers by Ashley Audrain which my mom friend gifted me, and I couldn’t put it down. I was quietly so entertained on the beach!
- Comfortable Travel Attire: Dress in layers to adapt to the ever-changing cabin temperature.
